when I was a boy , i loved to go on the Mekong river bank to watch at the boat racing which starts from the bank of Ban HouyNangli,Thakhek to Ban HouysaKham opposite with WatKang Temple. me and other friends or some time with brothers went to the river bank and watching the racing there. The boat usually comes from different villages and districts around the province and some years the boat from the other provinces such as Bolikhamxay and savanakhet had participated.

Jagewara was born in the august of 1979, he is a new generation ,His family raised many cow and buffalo and growing the rice for a living. he was responsible for taking the cow and buffalo when he was kid, his brothers and sisters sometime helped him, of course his mother was helpful . His father passed away when he was nine ( 3th grade) after his father died ,his mother and relative take care of the children, it was pretty hard for his mother to work hard for a living and take care all the members in the family.
In the dry season , the cow is free on the rice field , people would look for their cow at evening, Sometime people just can't find where are the cow? in the countryside people just let the cow free for a whole season and they will look for them when the rainy season starts.sometimes, their cow lose and sometime they have got more cows, because some of them give birth some baby cows
as for jagewara, his family live near the town where the cow could not free overnight, otherwise, the police would catch the cow and fine some money. one day after the cow back to the hut and he closed the gate, the cow broke the gate and out for eating some corn and banana at the garden while jagewaras was taking the bath down the house ( Use the water from will ), he was so angry when he saw the cows out and ate the corn and banana. he chased the cow into the hut and he hit onto a white cow by a long wood strongly and a white cow imediately down as if she got shot. later he back to take a bath with a little worried about a white cow, he was scared and worried the cow would die and then his mother would kill him, he went back to the hut agian and saw a white cow stands with a big swellen on the neck. he was so glad and regretful at the same time. that time on, he treated very well a white cow and other cows . the relationship between jagewara and cow were really deep ,he loved the cow as friend. one day, his family needed to sell out the cow to take some money for expeneses , Jagewara saw with his eyes when buyer pulled the cow, he remember very well, the cow didn't seem to go and leave from him and the house, jagewara almost lost his tear and when he saw the cow slowly walked after the buyer, especially the white cow .
jagewara was not so busy after the cow had sold, but he missed those cows, the cows those never return back to the hut. He missed those cows, the cows those he spent his childhood with them. Later, Jagewara was busy at taking care of buffaloes , the cows was sold, but buffalo must have been kept, because the bufflalo is the most important to help the farmer work at the rice field.
Many year later, jagewara graduated his high school and he received the scholarship to study at University of Laos, his mother had sold some of bufflalo due to no one take care of those bufflalo. a year later, Jagewara received the scholarship to study aboard and before he left the country, he visited home and visited his family and bufflalo, the bufflalo remain reconized him as a good friend, but some of those bufflalo didn't reconize him. because some were new members. Jagewara has left the country to study in aboard for 5 years and 3rd years he returned home and visited his mother and cousins. the city hasn't changed a lot since he left the country, but he felt very exciting and strangeful, the city, the road, the house looked very old compared to the past few years. his mother looks older, his newphews and nieces appear in front of him, he was really supprised to see them. those kid hadn't born yet when he left the country. as for the bufflalo, those bufflalo didn't seem to reconize him after 3 years, bufflalo were new members, the old buffalo were sold out and his mother only kept a few.
His mother remain kept the bufflalo untill today, People always asked" why don't you want to sell out, Mother"?

" I miss my sons and whenI see the bufflalo it reminds me my kids and re call a memory" his mother says

古代时有一位富人的儿子名塔马班，是一位聪明伶俐，有知识，令老百姓尊敬
没有一个人能与塔马班比较，因为他还能精通鸟语，其他动物的语言
同时，有个神仙“卡宾拉泼”听到塔马班的名声和能力就想与塔马班比赛，谁是最聪明和最有能力的人？
卡宾拉泼要向塔马班提问 3个问题，并与塔马班提出条件若塔马班能答对3个问题，卡宾拉泼愿意砍自己的头祭给塔马班，相反，若无能答 3个问题，塔马班将砍自己的头祭给卡宾拉。这种较量是很残酷的，有一个非死不可，2个老虎不能在同洞。
卡宾拉的 3个问题如下：

泼水节是自古以来的节日，每年4月13-15之间按照老挝农历的计算法，由于老挝有各个民族不同，各个民族都有不太一样的习惯，但是一个同样是泼水，我们相信泼水可以给人洗掉不好的东西，新年到吉祥也到来，一般人们到寺庙向佛像泼洗，向和尚泼洗，表示会给自己带来的吉祥和健康，孩子要给父母和老前辈泼水，表示给他们的祝福，祝福他们身体健康和好运。年轻人也互相泼水，我不认识你，你不认识我都不重要，最重要是新年到，大家用水互相泼，互相祝福等。

Do Lao people have the tomb sweeping festival?
Firstly,let's say about the Qingming festival in china,the Qingming is one of the most important festival for chinese people, it usually occures on the Appril 4th-6th earch year.the Qingming has been emerged in the history of china about 2500 years ago.
why is it so important?
Chinese never forget their ancestors. once a year to sweeping the tomp is necessary for anyone who are far way from their hometown and the tomb. the qingming day is the day that anyone who are far away from the ancestor's tomb have to come back to sacrifice to anccestors and sweeping the tomb or decorating the tomb. they prepare the fruits, food and many stuff for sacrifice.
as for lao culture and custom, we don't have the qing ming festival as chinese, the death people usually must be burned and take the bone ash to the temple according to buddism 's rule and then we put the bone ash into the stupa which we buit along the temple wall. We go to temple and offer the food to the monk ,those food will be sent our ancestors via the monks' words. we can sweeping or cleaning our ancestors' stupa every time when we reach the temple, but usually we do it on Lao new year or special day of buddhish .

Its name denotes a time for people to go outside and enjoy the greenery of springtime (踏青 Tàqīng, "treading on the greenery"), and also to tend to the graves of departed ones.

This is not Lao new year , but people called it as special day on Feb it depends on Laotian lunar calendar,I can't use English to explain it very well regarding the special day. this day is the best day of the year according to Laotian Lunar calendar , majority of Lao people celebrate it ,but this is not an official holiday in Laos . Many people in Vientiane capital city rarely celebrate this special day.

The Basi ,we can place any foods ,especially the vagetaliane on it ( as photo above) and the white cotton strings , the cotton strings will be tying around wrists to give the lucks. My mother has set a very small Baci Shoukhuane which invited many neighbors and cousins to garter together and tying the strings to each other. on this occasion, we eaten the chicken....

The colour white of the strings is meant for purity. The strings are comparable to greeting cards which are commonly used in Western cultures with written, happy or sad messages within. Our wishes are formulated orally and vary depending on the occasion whilst we tie the strings around the wrists. We usually tie three knots and the strings are to be worn for three days in order for the wishes to be effective. The ceremony of tying the strings around the wrists is called the “Basi” or “ Soukhouane” ceremony which is performed on different occasions such as weddings, new Year, house blessings, birthdays and farewells.

My first movie in Hongkong

First time I 've visited Hongkong in 2006 . Lao citizen are required a visa to entry the Hongkong and it made me unconvernient decision to back Laos and apply for a Hongkong visa.
This is my 3rd time visiting Hongkong in March,2009 and this is the first time in this year. I occasionally visit Hongkong, because 1st travel is my hobby and 2nd to accompany with girlfriend who has to visit Hongkong at least once a month.
We have some friends who live and work in Hongkong for a quite long, they treated us very well during our stay and they took us to the Movie theatre. the ticket costs $70 Hk a person. the movie called " Benjamin Button" which is very good story of a new baby born who is an old man after born and his mother dies after given birth him and his father refuses raise him due to his monster face and leaves him at the house of black american couple. the old baby (Benjamin) grows younger and younger, This is very interesting and touching story of Love and family.
The theatre room is not so large, We sat very close to the screen,I felt uncomfortable with my eyes because of my eyes are so good to sit near the screen and I needed to be adjusted some time and it turns better during the film was roll on interesting scense.However, thats one of the best movie ever and unforgetable movie in Hongkong. I would like to thanks to my friend, Peetu and Giulia....Grazie.

First, I want to tell anyone in any parts of the world that, Today, 5 March, the Train between the Bangkok and Thanaleng station ( Vientiane) open, So today on Laos is not on the list of Country has no train anymore!! wow! I can't wait to see how the exciting of Lao and Thai people have !!

BANGKOK - THAILAND and Laos on Thursday officially opened the first rail link connecting the two counties over a bridge spanning the Mekong River, a step towards a regional dream of connecting Asia by rail.

Thai Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the launch ceremony, boarding the first train from the Thai border town of Nong Khai which travels along 3.5 kilometres (2.1 miles) of track to Thanaleng in Laos.

From Thanaleng it is still another nine kilometres to the Laotian capital Vientiane but both sides hailed the inauguration as a key step towards opening up a regional route ferrying goods and passengers.

'The inauguration of this train link today (Thursday) will enhance transportation with our neighbouring country,' Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said in the opening speech.

The track over the Friendship Bridge took 20 months to complete and was funded by Thailand at a cost of about 197 million baht (S$8.4 million).

Two passenger trains will run the 30-minute return trip each day.

Laos foreign affairs spokesman Khenthong Nuanthasing said the track was the first rail link connecting landlocked Laos with the outside world.

'The railway is very important for the country,' he said a day ahead of the ceremony. 'As a way out of the country in the past there were only trucks, which are very expensive for exports. The cost of transportation will be less.' The link is part of a plan conceived in the 1960s to connect Asia with a continuous railway stretching west to Turkey and Russia and east to Vietnam and South Korea.

Decades of conflict and poverty stalled the plan but the breakup of the Soviet Union and the opening up of China have revived the dream, and in November 2006, 18 Asian nations agreed to integrate the continent by rail.

The UN-backed Trans-Asian Railway route now has nearly 74,700 kilometres of functioning track serving 29 countries, and United Nations officials have said they hope to complete the railway in 10 to 15 years. -- AFP

I returned to Laos before the chinese new year started, my trip was on 17th of Feb,2009. I live and work in shantou, a small town of Guangdong province,China. i Guess there is only one Laotian who live there and work for a few years. I never met a Lao people in this town. Sometime, I feel lonely and want to share with something with someone whom understand my mother language. My holiday was longer than any in the past, I 've spent my holiday almost a month with my family and friend in my hometown, it was reall relaxed and had a great time with great sticky rice and Lao food. I hardly returned back to china again, but of course, I had to, because I get a job and someone special in Shantou.

How did I travel to Laos from shantou?

Shantou is not far away from Vientiane if there is a direct flight, I think the plane will take maximum 2.30 hours from shantou to vientiane, but at the present time, there is no any direct flights to Guangdong province except the daily flight from vientiane-Kunming by the Lao airline and China Eastern airline. there are some routes to get to Laos if you are in China

1. Bus from Kunming-vientiane, this route is pretty hard, but it is good for some adventurer,I personally never take it!!

2.Lao airline fly daily from Vientiane-Kunming and China eastern airline as well

3.Airasia ( from Guangzhou-Bangkok ) time: (23:10-01:10) and then take a Lao airline or Thai airway to vientiane in the Morning , this route needs to wait 5-6 hours at the airport. besides the airairsia flies to Bangkok from shenzhen ( time:23:20-01:15) and you can catch the flight to Laos too.

Many people choose to fly to Bangkok from china to get into Laos, because they think it's faster and easier , so the Bangkok airport is very important for us, if the airport closes the problem will affect Laos's tourist industry and Laos will face a serious problem. now the bangkok to Pakse and savanakhet opens and easy to traveler whom head to the south of Laos, it takes only 1.3 hour by Lao airline and Bangkok airway. go to website www.Laoairlines.com

who says Laos doesn't have a railway? the train will be officially opening between Bangkok (Thailand) to Thanaleng status ( Vientiane,Laos), so it's a good news for tourism who will take a train from Bangkok to Laos.

There are many ways to get to LANDLOCK LAOS. so just don't worry about the transportation, you will feel safe and homely when you are in the most relaxed place in the world.

as for my trip to Laos, I flew from shantou to bangkok at 8 :30 am and then arrived at Bkk at 10:30 (local time) and then I flew to savanakhet where is in the south of Thakhek and I took the minivan 2 hours to thakhek. I started my trip at 8 am in china and arrived in my home at 6 pm ( local time) or 5 pm in china time. I totally spent almost 10 hours to get home. 4.30 hours was flying and 2 hours in the minivan bus .

Weaving Cloth-Weaving Nagas

The naga is the most outstanding and dominant motif in Lao woven textiles. artistically created with imagination and respect. it has been so inseparably bound to the livelihood of the lao people that whenever weavers speak of their work the term " Naga" is spontaneously mentioned first, as in the phrase " weaving cloth- weaving Nagas".
the Nagas have different names after the patterns created from imagination and from both Buddhist and animist beliefs. for instance, in the 'NAK HONG THIEN" ( candle house naga), the motif reflects the form of a Naga decorated with the candle used on " ork phansa“ the day of the boat racing festival to give thanks to the river and ask for its blessing. an example of Animist beliefs is the Ngeuk Laeng" (Drought Naga).which is believed to have the supernatural powers to cause storms, rain and drought. there is a poem narrating the supernatural powers of the Ngeuk Laeng saying:

Help me to make water run uphill;
Help me to bring the boat through the rapids;
Help me to take the Ngeuk Laeng to crush the mountain.

Lao people show their respect to the Naga is different ways, and many ethnic groups will not hurt snakes and nagas. people usually avoid wearing red clothes and red headscarves when crossing a river and neither does a wowan wear a sinh (Lao skirt) with a red waistband. it is considered that red is the colour of the Naga's crest, and whenever a naga sees people wearing red crossing the river he will assume they do not respect him and will hurt them.

In Tai Daeng custom, there are no marriages during the first month of the Luna calendar ,with the reason that the weather is so cold and the belief that during that period the ancestors' spirits who look after the house and family are on a journey to heaven to celebrate the Phii thaen festival ( Phii thaen are spirits who take care of the people of the house and are also responsible for punishments or deciding who should live or die). people in the family must postpone any ceremonies including weddings,since if there is any ceremony during that time, the ancestor's spirits have to leave the Phii thaen festival to join the family event at home, and they will then get angry with the family and cause problems, it is very interesting that when elder people teach the young about tradition they do not say much of the dangers of Phii thaen, but instead mention about the power of the Naga, as in part of a teachinf poem that a brother gives to his younger sister which says"

Nobody cuts a big tree to build a house
and the elders will not sew clothes for their daughter's wedding.
Do not make a thick blanket, nor a gift!
if you go for your wedding by the river, the Naga will sink your boat, and the red, yellow waves will claim everything.
so, sister, whatever happens don't get married! if you will go, i will ask you to stay;

A high raking Lao government officer told the media that,Laos will get out of the world's poorest countries by 2020. I am just a little disppointed to hear that the government of Laos will take at least 12 years to let Laos gets out of the poorest. Meanwhile, I am so supportive of what the government is presently doing the best for getting out of world's poorest lists. the government offer the best policy to attract the oversea investors to invest, especially in the hydro power plant,Mining and agriculture .hopefully those projects will be able to help Laos to be developing country.

I won't be that old to see the Laos becomes as developing country, Not world's poorest country in the world.

We spend a few times per month to travel in Hubei Province,China, I usually work in shantou and nearby, following the product at the factory and the quality control and some office work. Tianmen city 2 hours by car from Wuhan where the new factory is located. Tianmen's Landscape is very nice, but i don't really like the sky, because it's like the sky of Wuhan city, cloudy and full of fog on the sky always make me to think about the pollution in the city, perhaps, the city is polluted by many factories that send off the smoke.

Tianmen is the land of cotton tree, people are growing the cotton as their income and cotton becomes their family income annually , This city will become a modern city very soon, the building, Road construction and industrial building are growing up.

HANOI, Oct 8 (Bernama) -- China will invest 20.4 billion Chinese yuan (about US$ 3 billion) to build a 600-km railway segment running from its Southwestern province of Yunnan to Thailand's Mohan through Laos.

A feasibility study of the Yuxi-Mohan section of the China-Laos-Thailand international railway will be completed within this year, the Vietnam news agency (VNA) said.

The commencement of the construction works planned as early as possible, an official with the Yunnan railway construction leading group was quoted by VNA as saying.

Up to 70 percent of the total investment of the project will be provided by the Chinese Ministry of Railways, with the remainder being funded by Yunnan Province.

小时候非常喜欢看香港电影，老挝 80年代每家每户只要有电视机和它的接收塔就可以收看免费电视节目。由于老挝国家电视的信号来不到我们的家，因此，泰国电视节目成为老挝唯一选择。香港电影也是在泰国台收看的，配音也说泰国语，所以老挝人能听说泰语，其实，泰语和老挝语本身也没大区别。
香港片最喜欢是比较搞笑的，伤感，爱情和功夫片，刘德华我从小就看了他的电影。记得看了功夫电影之后喜欢与朋友模仿，用一支竹子当剑然后与朋友一起打起来，非常天真。小时候喜欢到邻居家看电视，有一位家主常对我说“功夫孩子，他一边说一边做功夫的动作，20多年了回家还是看到那位老头，可他可能忘了那番话 ”功夫孩子。那位老头是残疾人，只有一支腿。因为他是老兵，年轻时参加了战争，可能为了国家而丢了那个腿，非常敬意！！

还是回到香港的故事吧！！香港从电视里面看非常繁荣，有高楼大夏。 2006年，我的第一次去了香港，自己非常兴奋可是要去香港没那么简单，老挝公民需要办理签证才可以去香港，同样的不发达国家如越南，柬埔寨，缅甸也需要办理签证。一次签证可以停留14天。14天我觉得已经足够了在这样的地方旅游，实际上，我只有在香港待了3天，因为工作原因和高费用让我恨不得离开了那里，真没想到啊！香港住那么多外国人，不管是亚洲人，西方人，黑人什么都在那里，而老挝人呢，几乎没有了！！
在不久的将来，我还是希望再一次去香港旅游，呵呵！！

　　本报讯　9月16日，中国政府通过联合国世界粮食计划署向老挝捐赠了价值50万美元的黏米，以帮助受洪涝灾害的灾民和居住在偏远地区的村民。这是中国首次通过联合国机构对老挝实行粮食援助。

　　捐赠仪式在世界粮食计划署位于老挝首都万象的粮仓内举行。中国驻老挝大使潘广学、世界粮食计划署驻老挝代表卡琳·马奈特、世界粮食计划署驻中国代表韦安夏、老挝社会福利部副部长以及来自中国农业部和商务部的代表出席了捐赠仪式。

　　马奈特女士介绍说，老挝近期多个省市遭受了洪水，世界粮食计划署用中国政府2008年给老挝的50万美元定向援助在当地购买了近600吨黏米，这些粮食将被分发到最需要粮食救济的四个省。2007年，世界粮食计划署的援助计划使老挝近50万人受益。

　　中国驻老挝大使潘广学在接受记者采访时表示，中国政府提供的援助不仅能够帮助老挝解除贫困、缓解水灾带来的粮食压力，也体现了和联合国机构的良好配合。在全球经济一体化的形势下，通过多边途径对发展中国家实行援助是中国对外援助方式的一种新途径。

　　联合国世界粮食计划署是世界最大的人道主义救援机构，每年平均向80多个国家提供援助。自1979年起，它向中国提供了价值超过10亿美元的无偿粮食援助项目。2006年，由于中国经济的发展，世界粮食计划署停止了向中国提供援助项目，双方的合作进入一个新阶段。

Authorities in Laos detected a fresh outbreak of bird flu in the north of the country last week and slaughtered all poultry affected, a government spokesman says.

The government did not say how many birds were infected with the deadly virus, which was detected in a village about 150km north of the ancient royal capital Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

"We have killed all of the poultry within a kilometre radius - about 7,000 of them," and a quarantine zone has been set up on the area's perimeter, foreign ministry spokesman Yong Chanthalangsy told AFP.

No human infections were suspected, he said.

Two people have died of bird flu in communist-ruled Laos since 2003, when the virus resurfaced in Southeast Asia, according to World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics. Both deaths were reported last year.

The WHO says 243 people have died from bird flu worldwide. The H5N1 avian influenza virus mainly kills birds but scientists fear it could mutate to easily jump from human to human, sparking a global pandemic.

SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea and Laos agreed Saturday to foster economic cooperation as the Laotian prime minister began a goodwill visit, state media reported.

The two impoverished communist countries signed an agreement to establish a joint committee for cooperation in economics, trade, science and technology, the Korean Central News Agency reported in a dispatch from Pyongyang.

Laotian Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh arrived earlier Saturday accompanied by officials including his ministers of agriculture and industry.

Bouasone and North Korean Premier Kim Yong Il held talks in which "both sides exchanged views on boosting the bilateral friendly and cooperative relations and matters of mutual concern," KCNA said.

At a banquet, Kim and Bouasone made speeches lauding bilateral ties, it said.

Laos is a single-party state with a ruling communist party that tightly controls politics but allows a liberalized economy. Communist North Korea allows no political opposition but has experimented with limited market reforms in recent years.

Both countries are among the poorest in Asia.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said Bouasone's trip would last 11 days and follows a visit by Kim to Laos in November. The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1974, the agency said.

Bouasone visited South Korea in June, according to Yonhap.

Laos: Flood Damage In Laos Costs Millions Of Dollars

VIENTIANE, LAOS: The recent floods in Laos have inflicted damage worth hundreds of billions of kip (millions of dollars), destroying farmlands, irrigation systems, roads, schools and houses, according to unofficial reports.
The total cost of flood damage has yet to be officially confirmed because the government is still collecting information from provincial authorities.
But initial reports reveal extensive damage throughout the country.
In six of Vientiane 's nine districts the cost of flooding has already reached about 148 billion kip (US$78.5 million). This figure does not include damage to Sikhottabong and Xaysettha districts, which authorities are currently assessing.
In Luang Prabang province the cost of flood damage is almost 100 billion kip ($11.8 million). More than 50 billion ($5.9 million) of this damage was to the transportation sector, according to provincial authorities.
In Khammuan province the value of flood damage has not yet been calculated, but authorities say it will be worth at least 31 billion kip ($3.66 million). In that province floods destroyed rice fields, irrigation systems, roads and schools. Almost 6,000 of the total 11,884 hectares of rice fields were damaged, along with 167 hectares of other crops, 48 irrigation systems and 41 schools.
Authorities are continuing to supply clean water and dry food to villagers affected by the flooding.
In Borikhamxay province, authorities estimate damage to the agriculture sector to be at least 90 billion kip ($10.6 million). Road Number 13 South was damaged as were unpaved roads which had linked villages, according to provincial flooding and drought prevention committee head Leuam Sonsyvilay.
“We haven't calculated the cost of two flood-damaged schools and a number of irrigation canals yet,” he said.
A team from United Nations agencies is visiting Laos provinces affected by flooding, according to the national disaster management office.
Office head, Khamphao Hompaya, said UN agencies including the UNDP and UN Food and Agriculture Organisation would assess the urgent needs of villagers.
He said the amount of donations had yet to be calculated and urged ministries to report donation figures to his office so that he could inform the government.
According to Khamphao, the ministry of labour and social welfare is preparing more than 300 tonnes of rice while the ministry of health has asked for 1 billion kip ($118,131) to assist flood victims.
Most provinces were able to collect information about flood damage in areas such as agriculture, transport and education, but a more extensive assessment has yet to be completed. (By SOMSACK PONGKHAO/ The Vientiane Times/ ANN)

Laos, China to strengthen natural resource management co-op Technical staff from Laos and China have recently reached in-principle consensus on establishing a center for cooperation on land and natural resource management in Laos to exchange technical knowledge between the two countries, Lao newspaper Vientiane Times reported Thursday. China has valuable expertise in requiring investors to take into consideration environmental issues when developing projects, the newspaper quoted Chanthaviphone Inthavong, acting director of Laos' Center for Research and Information on Land and Natural Resources, as saying. China has faced similar problems to Laos, including deforestation for trade and agricultural purposes, but its officials have succeeded in introducing income-generating activities attached to forest preservation. Jin Jiaman, executive director of Global Environmental Institute, a Chinese non-profit, non-governmental organization in Beijing, said China had implemented a number of environmentally friendly land development projects in such Chinese localities as Sichuan and Yunnan over the past 10 years. Jin gave the example of a dam constructed in Sichuan province where the dam's investors established a fund to rehabilitate the forest and implement social and environmental activities to provide a preservation area for pandas. "This shows the development process can be aligned with environmental protection for sustainability," she said.
